TCM at Gaia: Your Questions, Answered
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been used for thousands of years to support balance and wellbeing. At Gaia, our TCM treatments offer a gentle, personalised approach to help you slow down, reconnect with your body and support your overall wellbeing.
But if you’ve never experienced TCM before, you may have a few questions. What actually happens during a treatment? Do the needles hurt? And what if you’re afraid of needles?
We’ve answered some of the questions we hear most often.
What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?
Traditional Chinese Medicine is a holistic system of healthcare that has been practised for thousands of years. It takes an individual approach, considering your physical wellbeing, lifestyle and overall sense of balance.
Depending on your needs, a TCM treatment may incorporate acupuncture, acupressure, massage, cupping, and other traditional techniques.
At Gaia, your treatment begins with a consultation, allowing your practitioner to understand your needs and tailor the treatment accordingly.
Do acupuncture needles hurt?
This is one of the most common questions, and the answer is usually no.
Acupuncture needles are extremely fine, much thinner than the needles used for injections or blood tests. When inserted, you may feel a tiny prick, a gentle sensation or sometimes nothing at all.
Your practitioner will work gently and carefully throughout your treatment, and you can always let them know if anything feels uncomfortable.

I’m scared of needles. Can I still have a TCM treatment?
Absolutely.
You don’t need to have acupuncture to experience the benefits of a TCM treatment. If you’re uncomfortable with needles, your practitioner can use hands-on techniques such as acupressure and massage instead.
The treatment can be adapted to your comfort level, so there’s no need to feel anxious about trying TCM.
What happens during a TCM treatment?
Your treatment begins with a consultation. Your practitioner will ask questions about how you’re feeling, your lifestyle and what you’d like to focus on during your time at Gaia.
From there, they’ll develop a treatment approach suited to you. Depending on your individual needs, this may include acupuncture, acupressure, massage or a combination of techniques.
The aim is to create a calm, supportive treatment experience that is unique to you.
Do I need to have a specific health concern to have TCM?
Not at all.
While TCM can be enjoyed simply as a way to slow down, relax and reconnect with your body, it can also be used to support a range of common health and wellbeing concerns.
Guests may seek TCM to support stress and tension, sleep, digestive and gut health, hormonal balance, menstrual wellbeing, energy levels, headaches, muscle tension and general relaxation.
You don’t need to arrive with a particular concern, either. Your practitioner will take the time to understand how you’re feeling, what you’d like to focus on and your overall wellbeing before tailoring the treatment to you.
Whether you’re looking to address a particular concern or simply give your body some focused attention, your TCM treatment is personalised to your individual needs.

How does acupuncture work?
Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on the concept of Qi, often described as the body’s vital energy, flowing through pathways known as meridians.
Acupuncture involves placing very fine needles at specific points on the body with the aim of influencing these pathways and supporting balance.
From a modern clinical perspective, research suggests acupuncture may influence the nervous system and other physiological processes. Your practitioner can explain more about the traditional and contemporary perspectives during your treatment.
What does acupuncture feel like?
Everyone experiences acupuncture differently.
Once the needles are placed, many people find the experience deeply relaxing. You may notice a mild tingling, heaviness, warmth or gentle sensation around certain points, while other needles may barely be noticeable.
It’s not uncommon for guests to become so relaxed during their treatment that they drift off to sleep.
How long does a TCM treatment take?
The length of your treatment will depend on the experience you choose and your individual needs. At Gaia, you can book either a 60- or 90-minute TCM treatment.
Your practitioner will guide you through the process during your consultation, so you’ll know what to expect before your treatment begins.

What should I expect after my treatment?
Many guests describe feeling calm and relaxed after TCM. You may also notice that your body feels different following your treatment.
Everyone responds differently, so we recommend allowing yourself some time to slow down afterwards. Stay hydrated, take things gently and enjoy the opportunity to continue your Gaia experience at a slower pace.
